From Grecian beaches to the North Fork of Long Island, ’tis the season to sit by the sea and soak up the sun, no matter which coast or country you plan to visit this summer. The flipside to that relaxing getaway: packing up all the gear you need, like towels and blankets, portable speakers, and a good book for starters, plus little treats like chilled pink wine and slices of watermelon to keep the crew happy (and hydrated!).

Here we’ve asked a handful of Vogue editors for their ultimate beach-vacation packing lists, which are filled with stylish yet practical essentials like sunglasses, sarongs, sunscreen, and swimsuits, which, on the whole, skew surprisingly casual. Birkenstocks and Havaianas sandals, for instance, make hot sands bearable, while no-fuss cover-ups are best for lugging chairs and picnic supplies from the parking lot to the beach. Versatility also ruled: A simple one-piece can double as a top when paired with a sarong or boardshorts, while a claw hair clip is the key to managing your mane on breezy days (and for making an easy transition when you’re ready for that raw bar aperitivo). Pack everything up in a stylish sand-proof pack, a nylon tote, or an oversize netted bag, and you’re good to go.

Still wondering what to bring along? Look no further than the editor-approved packing lists below.

San Diego

Anny Choi, Market Editor

I don’t have any big summer trips planned this year (yet), but I will most likely head home to San Diego to hang out with my family. Sometimes you need a vacation from your vacation, but heading home, for me, means I can unplug completely and really relax. My activities will involve eating lots of food and going to the beach. San Diego is super low-key and casual—you don’t really get “dressed up” to do anything. I will bring my new Amanu Studio sandals that I designed myself, all of my favorite Eres swimsuits, and an easy, breathable kaftan from Pippa Holt. My favorite sunscreen right now is this La Roche-Posay tinted sunscreen that my dermatologist recommended; it is the perfect amount of light coverage to use everyday! I always travel with a fancy toothpaste ever since I started Invisalign. I always need to be ready to brush my teeth, weather it is post a snack on the plane or a meal at the airport. This Aesop toothpaste feels like a true luxury in my mouth.

Paros, Greece

I just got back from Paros, a smaller Cycladic island that I loved much more than super-crowded Santorini. I am a big proponent of platforms, no matter the occasion, and wore these black Tevas across all of the island’s rocky beaches and cliffs, so I can vouch for their ultralight and comfy foam sole. Personally, I like a simple black swimsuit—no crazy straps, no weird tan lines. This minimal two-piece from Mikoh is pretty much perfect, and I can’t imagine it ever going out of style. I am very intense about my skin, and thus use three different sunscreens: SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion for the face (ultralightweight, great UV protection), Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel for the body (also lightweight, water-resistant), and Supergoop Sunscreen Mist for easy reapplication on the go.

While I love the idea of lounging around in an enormous straw hat—Lola’s, in particular, which I wear at home—a bucket hat was my more packable and generally practical alternative. Poche’s are super fun, particularly this cow print. Most beachgoers would probably pick a straw bag or canvas tote, but I actually prefer nylon—water and sand brush right off! For Paros, I brought an old Prada cross-body bag, but in hindsight, this carryall would have been the better choice to squeeze in water and a towel. Last, but not least: sunglasses, always, and a claw clip to pull your hair up. Wet hair ties are gross.

East Hampton, New York

Brooke Bobb, Fashion News Writer

Two of my best friends from college grew up in the Hamptons, and so when I travel out that way, I am lucky enough to stay with one of them at their family home, either in East Hampton or Sag Harbor. We usually wind up at the beach in East Hampton, and I always come prepared with the necessities: casual flip flops, sunscreen, a printed swimsuit, a wrap skirt, and lots of wine.

Long Beach Island, New Jersey

Steff Yotka, Fashion News Editor

I can’t wait to spend a week on Long Beach Island surfing, sunning, and eating Skipper Dipper ice cream every day and night. As a vacation spot that generally caters to the over-60 and under-10 crowds, it really is the perfect place to unwind and unplug—no influencers and no Instagram traps. Because it’s not really a see-and-be-seen hotspot, I tend to pack easy, effortless pieces: black one-pieces, lots of patterned board shorts, and reef-safe sunscreen are most important. Honestly, I probably won’t wear shoes for most of the trip—it’s an island!—but for when I must, these EVA Birkenstocks will do.

Long Beach Boardwalk, New York

Lauren Valenti, Senior Beauty Editor

I grew up on Long Island, so Long Beach, New York (yes, New York), holds a special place in my heart. Beautiful, relaxed, and unpretentious, to me it’s always felt as close to SoCal as a New Yorker could get. When I go there this summer, I’ll be leaning into classic summer materials, like brown leather and golden straw, and playing off them with muted greens and pinks for subtle pops of color.

Miami Beach

As a kickoff to the summer (and as a means to achieve a solid base tan), I recently took a quick jaunt to the Faena Hotel in Miami. Being that the rest of my summer beach visits will undoubtedly involve lugging monstrous coolers through the dunes and getting sand in my turkey sandwich (rather than being served pi?a coladas at my every whim by a nice man in red short shorts), this was my chance to go glam. With my Solid & Striped Bianca tankini and Staud Hutton bag as a Jacquemus-inspired starting point, the other essentials (simple scarf turned sarong and strappy heeled sandals) followed suit. After three full days of bluebird skies, I was longing for a big floppy sun hat—the perfect one here from Lola Hats to match my terra-cotta sarong. Noted for next time!

Santorini, Greece

Jenna Rennert, Beauty Editor

We are heading to Greece this summer for a little post-wedding R&R! I am obsessed with Reina Olga’s scrunch swimsuits—they are beyond flattering and travel so well in the brand’s cute plastic cases. Also on my packing list: breezy cover-ups that go from day to night, a pair of embellished sandals, and my Poolside straw tote, which goes with absolutely everything. And I never step foot outside without SPF! My favorites are EltaMD and Supergoop.
