Watch Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, and More Supermodels in Rare Footage From the New Kevyn Aucoin Documentary

    Beautiful Creatures

In a new documentary, Kevyn Aucoin’s never-before-seen personal video archive offers a revealing look inside the world of fashion’s first celebrity makeup artist.

“Hi, Kevyn,” Cindy Crawford whispers on set to the makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin, who is taking a break from prepping the supermodel, resplendent in all her ’90s glory—bombshell brunette hair, pillowy lips, and signature beauty mark. Aucoin is documenting the interaction with a handheld camcorder, an accessory that became as familiar to his A-list clientele as his signature sculpting brush. Nearly 20 years later, Aucoin’s personal footage, documenting many intimate—and sometimes dramatic—moments between him and his iconic collaborators and friends, will become public for the first time in the documentary Kevyn Aucoin Beauty & the Beast in Me, which debuts on Logo this Thursday, September 14.

“I was blown away,” director-producer Lori Kaye recalls of watching just a few similarly unscripted scenes after being given access to her friend’s private video archive by Aucoin’s father, Isidore, in 2004, two years after Aucoin’s death. Her new film is the result of feeling “a responsibility to the footage,” she says, “and to Kevyn and his story.”

That story began in 1962 in rural Louisiana, where Aucoin was born to a teenage mother and raised by his adoptive family. Bullied relentlessly, Aucoin, who had known he was gay since age 6, quit high school when classmates tried to run him over with a pickup truck. He began experimenting with makeup as a preteen, using his sister and mother as models before enrolling in a local beauty school.

At 20, Aucoin made the pilgrimage to New York City, where he got his big break in 1986: a Vogue cover featuring Crawford, shot by Richard Avedon. Aucoin would collaborate on 18 covers for the magazine over the next two decades. “His makeup was paint,” recalls Crawford. “He would literally erase your face, and then he would build you back stronger, faster, more beautiful.” Aucoin’s client roster soon included Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Sarah Jessica Parker (he made two cameos on Sex and the City in 2001), helping him almost single-handedly create the category of celebrity makeup artist.

If Aucoin seems like a Snapchat forerunner, his need to document himself may have had more to do with catharsis than self-promotion. During a fraught moment in Beauty, Aucoin films his reunion with his birth mother, who struggled to accept him for the gay, outspoken liberal he’d become. “She rejected me twice,” he explained afterward.

Yet he found joy in his work, and 15 years after he overdosed on the painkillers he took to manage his acromegaly—a rare disorder resulting from excessive growth hormone—Aucoin’s legacy is now immortalized on-screen for a new generation that has already felt his influence. “When I was 7 or 8, I picked up Making Faces in a shop in London,” editorial makeup artist Isamaya Ffrench recalls of discovering Aucoin’s revolutionary 1997 how-to book. “If I’m completely honest, he’s the main reason I’m a makeup artist now.”
