The U.S. Open Is Equal Parts Sport and Fantasy

As we head into the last matches of this year’s U.S. Open, including the first final between American women since Serena Williams defeated sister Venus in 2002, it’s easy to forget that tennis is about much more than just the game. For many, the real appeal lies in the fact that tennis, more than most, is equal parts sport and fantasy. There are the tennis skirts that twist around midair, as elegant as a ballerina’s tutu; there’s the tennis club, a place to see and to be seen; and, of course, there are the players, including the celebrated icons who have become household names—a fate that might befall this year’s two top female players, Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens.

For photographer Daniel Shea, the U.S. Open is all about the spectacle that surrounds the matches and the people it attracts. “I was looking for the stuff in the margins of the main events,” he said. “I had an all-access pass, which was incredible. I could wander around everywhere, even when there were no matches. I would climb onto things and look at others.” Shea’s pictures capture exactly that: a backstage view of one of the world’s biggest podiums for tennis. We see players midair, we see eye-catching outfits (witness Stephens’s neon dress, for example), but we also see the cameras and screens that are ever present. “It was very visually stimulating,” Shea confirmed. “The court is an incredible thing to photograph because it’s so physical and a very beautiful composition of colors.” His photos capture the court as the stage it is, and it’s one on which some of America’s brightest stars are performing.
